John Harkes, perhaps the most proficient field player in United States soccer history, felt really disgraced when dumped by coach Steve Sampson on the eve of his third World Cup last year. But why was in dumped? What was the reason for dumping John Harkes? Well, According the Steve Sampson, former US soccer coach, John Harkes was dropped because he was having an affair with his teammate’s wife. That teammate was Eric Wynalda.
On the other hand, John Harkes completely denied having an affair with Eric Wynalda’s wife, Amy Wynalda. Erric Wynalda brought it up during a discussion on “Fox Football Fone-In” over an outrage in England due to a supposed bond between English captain John Terry and the former partner of his teammate Wayne Bridge.
Steve Sampson is happy that the story was coming out now so that “maybe people will have a little better of an knowledge of what happened in the final months leading up to the World Cup.”
